 SI Coach Application

NOTE: Depending on the section you coach, the SI Coach job duties will be performed in-person, online, or hybrid.   

Pre-semester SI Training will be done in person August 23-24, 2023. 



Supplemental instruction is a series of weekly review sessions for students enrolled in selected courses.  Students have an opportunity to compare notes, discuss important concepts, and take practice tests before taking the graded exam. Students will also increase their strategies for test taking, studying and learning.  An SI Coach facilitates the SI sessions and is a student who has a high level of verified course knowledge and is trained in group facilitation.



A typical SI Coach work-week involves approximately 7-12 hours, depending on the course:

  • 3 to 8 hours attending class lectures/labs, depending on the subject.
  • 1 to 2 hours planning SI sessions.
  • 2 hours facilitating SI sessions.
  • ½ hour meeting with course instructor.


Hiring Steps:

  • Submit an SI Coach application and unofficial transcripts from ECC and/or another college you have attended.
  • Attend an SI Session demonstration.
  • Fill out a hiring questionnaire in the subject you want to coach.
  • Schedule an interview.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Enjoy interacting with other students.
  • Have a good understanding of the content in the course you want to coach.
  • Be able to interact with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Be able to commit to working an average of 7-12 hours per week for the entire semester.
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
  • On-Campus and Online positions available.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist students with course content and academic development.
  • Attend all scheduled class lectures and labs.
  • Plan and facilitate two 60-75 minute SI sessions per week.
  • Promote the SI sessions to the class.  Effective promotion is essential to increasing student attendance in the SI sessions.
  • Help students refine learning skills such as note taking, test preparation, problem solving, organization, and group studying.
  • Meet with the SI instructor once a week to discuss course content and session planning.
  • Attend training and staff meetings.
